Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co., founded in Yarmouth in 2017, bought its seventh location, in New Gloucester, and is restarting a brewing facility there and adding a kitchen, pub and disc golf course.
“We’ll have a craft beer vibe,” said the company’s president and owner, Brad Moll. “You’ll be able to eat there and walk out back and play disc golf. We’ll have a lot of outdoor seating.”
Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. bought 437 Lewiston Road from NU Property LLC for $1,620,400.
The property was listed at $1.9 million and included a brewery and taproom on about 8 acres, with all furniture, fixtures and equipment.
Cheri Bonawitz and Karen Rich of Malone Commercial Brokers brokered the transaction.
The property consists of a 7,640-square-foot building on about 8 acres that was the location for a business called Nu Brewery.
“This was a strategic for us, because the brewery is all set up,” said Moll. “We can start brewing beer immediately.”
Moll said he had been looking for a facility to expand his brewing operation for a couple of years.
“This came along,” he said.
Moll opened Brickyard Hollow with Frank Grondin at 236 Main St. in Yarmouth, as that town’s first craft brewery. It also has a full bar and food and a covered outdoor beer garden. The name comes from early in the village's history, when a depression in the land was filled and became a town gathering place.
The first location was a natural choice.
“I live in Yarmouth village,” Moll said. “I have a passion for craft beer and craft breweries. I just wanted to put a small craft brewery on Main Street. I thought it would be a great gathering place for Yarmouth village.”
The partners subsequently opened locations in Freeport, Portland, Skowhegan and Ogunquit.
By late 2022, Brickyard Hollow was getting ready to open its sixth location in Eustis.
Today, the company has about 135 employees. Moll didn’t share production numbers, but said the company has been experiencing an average of 27% growth in annual beer sales.
With that growth, “we were in desperate need of a new production brewing facility,” said Moll.
The company started out brewing at its original location in Yarmouth.
“When we outgrew that, we had to start contract brewing with other local breweries that had excess capacity,” he said.
The New Gloucester facility will provide plenty of room to consolidate production and to grow, he said.
The location will follow the company’s brew pub model with the addition of a kitchen and seating. A small disc golf course will be built on the property’s 8 acres.
“We have the construction project going on now,” he said.
The goal is to be open before Memorial Day. Hiring has already begun; it’s expected that about 15 people will be hired for the location.
Financing for the purchase and construction was provided by Maine Community Bank and the U.S. Small Business Administration 504 program through Paul Collins at Granite State Development Corp. in Portland. The 504 program provides loans advantageous to borrowers for certain commercial purposes in combination with a regular bank loan. Granite State is a certified development company, a nonprofit that administers the 504 program on behalf of the SBA.
