The brothers of the Franciscan monastery in Bucksport plan to open a brewpub in a former tanning salon on Main Street at which they will sell the beer they’ve been brewing at their one-barrel brewery for the past four years.
The taproom will open in November or December, Brother Donald Paul of the Franciscan Brothers of St. Elizabeth of Hungary monastery told the Bangor Daily News. The brothers started brewing beer in 2013 to complement the bakery they own on Central Street in Bangor. Proceeds from the bakery and brewery help to keep the three-monk monastery open, they said.
Selling the beer directly to the public in a brewpub, Paul told the newspaper, “is the economically viable option for us.”
Friar’s Brewhouse beer is already available at stores and restaurants in the Bangor and Ellsworth areas. They will continue to maintain the Friars Bakehouse in Bangor and will offer their baked goods at the brewhouse.
The monastery told the BDN that Bucksport is going to be a good place to do business. “We actually had a really hard time finding an available storefront,” Paul told the BDN.
