To find new entrepreneurial talent across Maine, Northeastern University Roux Institute is going back on the road with one-day gatherings called "Start Summit.” This year’s series will kick off in Lewiston.
Billed as fun and interactive team events, the summits let participants experience what it’s like to build a startup team and race to develop a concept — and compete for cash prizes for the top two ideas.
Budding business trailblazers are encouraged to explore new and innovative ideas for improving and making a positive impact on their community through an entrepreneurial lens.
They can do that by taking part in a Design Thinking workshop, working with a team to identify a high-potential problem, learning from a current startup founder, and pitching their idea to a panel of judges. The first-place team will win $3,000 and the second-place team will take home $2,000.
"The overarching goal of these events is to create a low barrier to entry opportunities for Mainers from across the state to learn about entrepreneurship, and to gain skills that they can use to create or further advance their own startups," Alexa Kummrow, a spokesperson for Northeastern in Boston, told Mainebiz.
The 2023 series kicks off this Thursday with a Start Summit at the Lewiston Public Library, in partnership with the library, the city and the Community Organizing Alliance.
Further Start Summits are planned in Portland in March (under the theme "From Waste to Prototype"), Skowhegan in April ("Outdoor Recreation & Tech”) and Rockland in April ("Innovation in Coastal Economies").
More Start Summits are in the works for 2023, Kummrow said.
The events are open to anyone age 18 and older. Those who are interested can register for Friday's all-day gathering in Lewiston and find out more about the series here.
