Canadian tourists in Maine on the decline

The number of Canadian tourists coming to Maine is declining, and the main culprit is the dwindling value of the Canadian dollar.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Canadian visitors declined from 5.5 million in 2013 to 4.2 million in 2014, when the value of the Canadian dollar went below 90% of the U.S. dollar’s value. The Canadian dollar is now worth 78 U.S. cents.

Carolann Ouellette, director of the Maine Office of Tourism, told the newspaper that this year is expected to see similar numbers, though, overall, visitation to Maine has increased. Greg Dugal, executive director of the Maine Innkeepers Association, said hotels are reporting slower business than anticipated this year.
