The CAT, the high-speed catamaran ferry that operates between Portland, Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, N.S., is cutting its season short due to high fuel prices and low passenger numbers.
Starting Sept. 2, the ferry will cut back its scheduled round trips from seven to five a week, according to a press release from Bay Ferries Ltd., which operates The CAT. The ferry also will end its season on Oct. 6, eight days earlier than originally planned. Bay Ferries cited the high cost of fuel for affecting its operating costs and limiting the number of North American vacation travelers, and said that the strength of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar and confusion over passport requirements also contributed to a decline in passengers. The news comes despite $4.4 million Nova Scotia invested in Bay Ferries in early July to help the company stay afloat in the face of the high fuel prices.
The number of United States visitations to Canada in June was down nearly 16% from last year, according to the press release.
