Cianbro plans energy facility at former radar station

Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp. is one of three New England companies that have purchased a former U.S. Air Force radar station in Somerset County, with plans to use it to generate energy. Cianbro announced yesterday it bought the 1,300-acre property in Moscow along with two Massachusetts-based firms, Conroy Development Corp. and Jay Cashman Inc.

The companies bought the property from the U.S. General Service Administration through a bidding process for $730,000, according to reports from the Bangor Daily News and the Sun Journal. Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue said the partners are still developing plans for how to use the site, but said they're interested in siting wind power and other energy types. The property is ideal for electricity generation because of its remote location and existing power lines and substations, according to Vigue. It also has about 30,000 square feet of building space, which could be used to house new businesses like manufacturers and IT firms, Vigue said. A Moscow spokesman said the town is excited about the potential for new jobs and an expanded tax base.

A real estate firm, Conroy Development has a number of large clients, including General Dynamics, which owns Bath Iron Works and gun manufacturer Armament and Technical Products in Saco, according to the Bangor Daily News. Jay Cashman is a construction company that specializes in civil, marine and dredging work, as well as wind power installation. It handled construction of the 10-turbine wind farm on Spruce Mountain in Woodstock, operated by Patriot Renewables.
