Concern over economy, jobs wanes

Mainers' concern over the economy and unemployment has dropped over the past year, according to a new poll from Critical Insights.

The fall 2009 Critical Insights on Maine poll, released Friday, found that 31% of respondents thought the economy was the most important issue facing the state, dropping by nearly half from the same poll one year ago, when concern over the economy hit a 10-year high of 59%. Worry over unemployment dropped from 27% in the spring of 2009 to 11% now. Health care ranked second as the most important issue facing the state with 17%, an increase over this spring's 7%. Worry about taxes also crept up from 7% to 10% compared with this spring. The number of people who said the economy is worse than one year ago plummeted from 92% in the fall of 2008 to 41% this fall, while 31% said it was the same and 27% said the economy had improved in the last 12 months.

Portland-based Critical Insights surveyed 600 random residents via telephone interviews between Oct. 23 and Oct. 27.
