Ival "Bud" Cianchette, one of the founders of Cianbro Corp., died Thursday at the age of 83 from liver cancer.

Cianchette, along with his three brothers Kenneth, Carl and Alton, started the construction firm in Pittsfield in 1949 from savings they pooled from their services in World War II, the Morning Sentinel reported. Today Cianbro employs more than 2,500 and generates about $450 million in contract revenues annually, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Cianchette led the company during its largest growth period in the1970s, and also served as president of the Associated General Contractors of America in the early 1980s, the Daily News reported. Outside of business, he was passionate about horses and founded Cianchette Stables, which bred and trained Standardbred race horses, according to the Portland Press Herald.
