After 36 years at Dead River Co. and six years at the helm, Deanna Sherman will retire as president and CEO at the end of June but stay on in a senior advisory role.
The South Portland-based company announced Sherman's retirement on Thursday, and said she will be succeeded by Casey Cramton, who currently serves as chief operating officer.
With more than 1,100 people in over 50 offices across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and western Massachusetts, Dead River is the largest heating fuel supplier north of Boston.
Sherman joined the company in 1986, moving up the ranks to district manager positions, region manager and then to president of the energy division, before becoming president and CEO in 2016. The Colby College alumna was honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2016.
“It is a true privilege to work and live in Maine, and an honor to lead one of Maine’s oldest and largest employers," Sherman said. "Working with such a dedicated team of people for so many years has been immensely rewarding, both professionally and personally. I am now looking forward to enjoying my newfound time and flexibility with my family and friends in our beautiful state of Maine."
She also paid homage to her successor, who has been with Dead River for more than 35 years.
“Throughout his career, Casey has always been ready and eager to take on more responsibility, whether that meant living and working in our various locations across Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont" she said. “I am certain Casey will bring a fresh perspective to the office, and under his leadership, Dead River Co. will continue to serve our customers and our communities just as we always have.”
Cramton, a U.S. Army veteran and graduate of the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, is set to take over as president and CEO on July 1.
Dead River Co., founded in 1909, has a long history of hiring military veterans, citing their ability to think strategically and take initiative.
“The faith Deanna has shown in me, and the commitment all Dead River employees give to this company and our customers make it exciting to come to work every day,” Cramton said.
“Deanna has done an exemplary job of leading this organization, most recently through the pandemic. We have continued to grow, while remaining true to our motto of ‘delivering on a promise’ to our customers and the communities we serve.”
He added, “Our company is strong, and I am humbled and honored to be asked to lead this talented team into the future."
