EMMC eliminates 15 positions

Eastern Maine Medical Center is eliminating or reducing the hours of 16 positions to bring the Bangor hospital's costs in line with projected revenue.

Of the 16 workers affected, nine will be offered other positions; one full-time position will be reduced to part time; two employees have opted for severance packages; and four others are being offered assistance to find new employment, according to a release from the hospital. The cutbacks followed $19 million in savings the hospital already made this year, bringing the budget to a "break-even point," which won't sustain operations in fiscal 2010, according to the release.

The changes will affect several departments at the hospital, reported the Bangor Daily News, including data management, maintenance, the dialysis center, human resources and patient care administration. The medical center employs 3,600 people.
