Ex-Hostess plant in Biddeford sells at discount

A former Hostess plant in Biddeford sold for $6.9 million, a broker for the deal reported.

The site, at 1 Baker St., closed in November 2012, ending 370 jobs. The Portland Press Herald reported in June that the former bakery was on the market for $8.45 million.

The sale was reported Tuesday in the Mainebiz Real Estate Insider, a weekly email. The buyer was listed as Biddeford Holdings LLC. Tony McDonald of CBRE/The Boulos Co. brokered the deal, which closed Oct. 24.

McDonald said the new owner is looking to lease the 265,000-square-foot property for another food use — possibly a brewery, a soup maker or other major producer. A deed restriction prevents it from being another bakery. It would split the property into smaller sections, allowing for multiple leases.

Under Hostess, the baking facility produced rolls, cakes and Wonder Bread.

Hostess’ closure in Biddeford was part of a bankruptcy reorganization at Hostess, which was subsequently purchased for $360 million in July 2013 by Thomasville, Ga.-based Flowers Foods (NYSE: FLO), whose other brands include Nature’s Own and Tastykake. As part of the deal, Flowers acquired 20 bakeries and 36 depots from the seller, Old HB Inc., the former Hostess Brands. Flowers has roughly $3 billion in annual sales.

Flowers Foods is in the process of selling eight shuttered Hostess plants, the Press Herald reported in June.
