Expiring contracts leads to EMDC layoffs

Eastern Maine Development Corp. in Bangor has laid off three full-time employees due to a funding shortage related to the end of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

EMDC President Michael Aube told the Bangor Daily News the organization laid off the three people last week as contracts funded by federal stimulus money, as well as state and local contracts, ended. Aube said EMDC needed to reorganize to reduce overhead costs and ensure more funding went to programs. The organization laid off seven people last June, and now has 53 employees.

The nonprofit agency provides economic development services in Hancock, Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
