Fairchild scuttles relocation plan

Fairchild Semiconductor will stay in its current location, foregoing plans to build a new, 90,000-square-foot office space in Scarborough.

The developer of the Gateway Square project, Gene Beaudoin, told the Portland Press Herald that Fairchild told him yesterday it abandoned its plan to move from its Running Hill Road location in South Portland. Last week, Beaudoin canceled a special meeting with Scarborough Town Council to discuss restructuring a credit enhancement agreement needed to support the Fairchild project, reported the paper.

The company announced a worldwide layoff of 12% of its work force in mid December, citing a decline in demand for its semiconductors. The company employs about 1,000 in Maine.
