The future of Jyang-Lee's Kitchen, a Maine-based producer of turkey wontons, egg rolls and dumplings, is in question after the state ordered a voluntary recall of its products.
The Bangor Daily News reported the recall was ordered on Wednesday, but the state said no illness has been found in connection with the food.
The state Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Program said inspectors found the company had been operating without being issued a grant of inspection by state or federal regulators, and that its products had not received a proper review.
Angela Fagin, of Jyang-Lee's Kitchen, told the BDN she contested the state's claim that the recall was involuntary. She said the state's suggestion that she find a larger, certified company to make her products was not financially viable, adding that she is unsure of what the company's next steps will be.
Melissa Weston, co-owner of Weston's Meats, the only state-inspected poultry plant in Maine, said it appears the state is placing greater scrutiny on small poultry producers.
