PUC: FairPoint must issue rebates

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has ordered FairPoint to give rebates to Maine customers for poor customer service.

The rebate is part of a rate adjustment the PUC has ordered because FairPoint "has failed to meet its required service quality indices for 2008-2009," according to a release from the commission. FairPoint must now send rebates of $1.72 per line per month beginning this month until Dec. 1, 2010. Those rebates add up to $8 million, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Since October, FairPoint has requested three delays on the rate adjustment, which were all dismissed by the PUC. The order, filed Monday, gave the PUC the authority to file the rate adjustment directly, according to the release. If FairPoint ignores the order, the PUC can impose other penalties, according to the paper.
