General Dynamics cutting 110 in Saco

A General Dynamics arms manufacturer in Saco is laying off 110 workers as the reduction in U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan has reduced the Army's demand for heavy machine guns and grenade launchers.

The layoffs were announced to workers Thursday and will take place at General Dynamics Armament & Technical Products between June 14 and July 1, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Karl Johnson, a spokesman for the company, told the paper that the layoffs are "concurrent with the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Johnson said the workers' union uses seniority to determine which employees will keep their jobs and no individual layoff notices have yet been issued.

The company, formerly known as Saco Defense, currently employs 340 people and also produces weapons systems for aircraft and helicopters.
