Gov. candidate Hammer sues Sec. of State
Independent gubernatorial hopeful Alex Hammer is suing the Secretary of State's office for failing to put him on the November ballot as an unenrolled candidate.
Hammer, of Bangor, claims he gathered more than 5,900 signatures to put his name on the ballot. But the Secretary of State's office says Hammer was about 800 signatures short of the 4,000 needed because he tried to submit electronic copies of petitions to local clerks for verification instead of submitting the required paper copies, according to the Bangor Daily News. On Monday, Hammer filed an appeal in Penobscot County Superior Court, saying Secretary of State Matt Dunlap's actions prevented him from qualifying and accusing the office of acting "recklessly and harmfully" toward him.
Dunlap did not comment on the case, but has said previously that Hammer did not follow proper procedures by submitting electronic or scanned petition sheets.
