Group challenges Kibby expansion
A citizens' group has filed a petition with Maine's supreme court challenging regulators' approval of an expansion of the Kibby Wind farm in western Maine.
In the petition to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, Friends of Boundary Mountains say the state's Land Use Regulation Commission erred when it approved developer TransCanada's 11-turbine expansion of its Kibby project to nearby Sisk Mountain, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. LURC approved a revised application for a permit in January, after TransCanada downsized the expansion from 15 turbines to 11. "It's clear the changed proposal never received the required scrutiny by LURC that the original proposal did, otherwise it never would have passed muster," group spokesman Bob Weingarten said in a statement. The petition also claims LURC ignored data about Kibby Wind's output, which shows the wind farm is not performing as TransCanada asserts.
The petition asks the court to review the decision.
