Maine’s annual Hire-A-Vet campaign is off to a strong start after last month's kickoff job fair in Augusta attracted a record turnout.
The Maine Department of Labor said Wednesday that this year's hiring fair attracted an estimated 578 job seekers, including 182 veterans, and more than 230 employees.
It said that many employers hired on the spot at the Aug. 29 job fair in Augusta and continue to hire.
There were also 15 veteran resource organizations in attendance, and the largest-ever display of military equipment at the annual event, along with a record number of sponsors.
The 2019 campaign, which aims to see 100 veterans hired in 100 days, officially began on Labor Day. In 2018, 191 employers participated and 286 veterans and military family members were hired.
Since its inception in 2015, the annual initiative has connected nearly 500 employers with over 900 veteran-hires, and has been recognized as a best practice by the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.
“Veterans have received valuable training during their military service that can transfer to in-demand civilian skills,” said Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman in a news release.
She added: “The Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign helps connect veterans with employers, and employers with the skilled workforce they are looking for. I encourage anyone searching for their next job, or their next employee, to consider participating in this year’s campaign.”

The Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign is a partnership between the Maine Department of Labor and its CareerCenters, Portland-based nonprofit Boots2Roots, Easter Seals and its Veterans Count program, the Maine National Guard Employment Support Program, Maine Bureau of Veterans Services, Transition Assistance Advisors, VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, and State Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment.
