HIV facility will close as demand falls

The only assisted living facility in Maine founded to care for HIV and AIDS patients will close by the end of the year.

The nonprofit Franny Peabody Center is closing the Peabody House in Portland because new drugs help the disease's victims live longer and better, and since 2005 the center has been at capacity for only 10 of 42 months, the Portland Press Herald reported. The nonprofit will continue to provide case management services and prevention programs to more than 1,000 Mainers every year.

The Peabody House is a six-bed home that has provided care for 71 HIV/AIDS patients since it was founded in 1995 by five activists, including its namesake, Franny Peabody. Thirty-nine of those residents died at the facility, according to the newspaper.
