The Maine Department of Transportation will build a roundabout at the intersection of Routes 2 and 7 in the Penobscot County town of Newport to address collisions in what the department says is a high-crash area.
Gordon Contracting Inc., of Sangerville, will manage the $7 million project.
Construction will begin April 14 and is expected to run into November. The work will involve the full closure of Route 2 at Route 7, east of Lovely Drive for a quarter-mile.
Through-traffic on Route 2 will be detoured to High Street and Banks Road but local business traffic on Route 2 will still be able to use High St. Through-traffic on Route 11 will be able to pass through the intersection.
Anyone interested in more details can attend an information session with the Maine Department of Transportation scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building at 21 Water Street.
