Izzy’s Cheesecake, a dessert destination in Portland for 35 years, has closed its doors permanently.
The bakery, at 135 Walton St., shut down unexpectedly last week, citing “changing market conditions” that made it infeasible to continue, according to a Facebook post by the store.
“It is with much regret that Izzy’s Cheesecake is closing effective immediately. We would like to thank all of our customers for your support over the last 35 years and will miss seeing you in our store,” the post read.
By Monday morning, the Izzy’s announcement had drawn nearly 300 responses, most expressing sadness over the news and appreciation of the shop’s creations.
“This breaks my heart,” wrote one Facebook member. Another posted: “Oh my gosh, say it ain’t so … You helped us mark so many special occasions, thank you for adding a bit of sweetness to our lives!”
Founded by David “Izzy” Izenstatt in 1985, Izzy’s grew to become a specialist in cheesecake, with 37 flavors including White Chocolate Raspberry Swirl, Crème de Menthe Oreo Chocolate, seasonal flavors and a gluten-free variety. From its one location, open six days a week, Izzy's served over 200 restaurants, grocery chains such as Whole Foods, and retail establishments throughout New England, according to the bakery's website.
The closing comes after several long-established Portland eateries recently have also ceased operation, including Silly’s restaurant and the Brian Boru pub.
We have lost several eating establishments lately due to "changing market conditions," and wonder exactly what those conditions might be. Could it have to do with the minimum wage increase?
