Judges order expedited redistricting

A panel of three federal judges has ruled that Maine's two congressional districts must be redrawn before the 2012 election in light of new Census figures.

The districts were scheduled to be adjusted in 2013, but 2010 Census numbers released in March show Maine's 1st District has nearly 8,700 more residents than the 2nd District, prompting two Mainers to file a federal lawsuit against the state requesting redistricting before the next congressional election, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

Gov. Paul LePage, Secretary of State Charles Summers and the leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature are listed as defendants in the case, but have said they agree with the plaintiffs. The Maine Democratic Party, which joined the lawsuit as an intervener, worries Republicans will find a way to redraw districts to their advantage.
