Last beam goes up at cPort Middle St. branch building site

cPort Credit Union held a topping-up ceremony Wednesday at the building site of its future branch on Middle Street in Portland to mark the hoisting of the final beam. Portland-based cPort Credit Union is on track to complete construction of a new branch at 35 Middle St. this year after putting up the last beam at the site on Wednesday.
Located at the corner of Middle and India streets, the future branch is next to Duckfat and Ribolita restaurants and is adding to the flurry of construction activity in the area, which includes WEX Inc.’s new waterfront headquarters under construction nearby.
Representatives of Landry/French Construction and Gawron Turgeon Architects signed the beam before it was hoisted into place on the building’s fourth story. Also adding their signatures were: cPort President and CEO Gene Ardito; cPort board members Scott Paquet and Jim Cloutier; Quincy Hentzel, CEO of the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and a member of cPort’s board; and Deb Andrews, Historic Preservation Program Manager for the City of Portland.
cPort said the new branch is a result of increased membership in recent years, including 11% growth in 2017, and will give local residents and members more customer service options in Portland’s Old Port.
Ardito told Mainebiz in a recent “On the Record” interview that the Middle Street location was an “excellent area for us to build our branch and continue to grow our membership.”
He added that the credit union has been proactive in that regard, for example by reaching out to the immigrant community with loans to fund their path to citizenship and build credit. The institution also prides itself on a diverse workforce that includes new Mainers.
Founded in 1931, cPort has assets of more than $200 million and over 21,000 members, and was ranked ninth-largest is the Maine’s ninth-largest credit union ranked by membership in a recently published Mainebiz list.
The Middle Street branch will be the third in Portland for cPort, which also has locations in Scarborough and Augusta. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Cumberland, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Androscoggin and York counties.
