Lawsuit over Maine privacy law dropped

A lawsuit challenging a new Maine law that would make it illegal to collect or receive personal information about minors for marketing purposes without parental consent has been dropped.

A group of businesses and trade groups, including a coalition of Maine colleges and the Maine Press Association, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Bangor because they see the law, which was scheduled to take effect Sept. 12, as a restriction of their ability to do business in Maine, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The groups agreed to drop the lawsuit after Maine Attorney General Janet Mills said she would not enforce the law before referring it back to the Senate's judiciary committee for review before the next full session of the Legislature convenes in January, the paper reported.
