LePage to take on all budget questions

Gov. Paul LePage has asked his administration's department heads to allow him to answer all questions in their stead from the Legislature's budget-writing appropriations committee.

The Portland Press Herald reported LePage's spokeswoman confirmed that if someone from the LePage administration is asked to testify before that committee, it will be LePage.

Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves denounced the move, expressing concern that not hearing directly from department heads could slow the committee's work; the next two-year budget takes effect July 1.

The latest move follows a hearing last week where the governor was denied the opportunity to comment during an unscheduled appearance. LePage sought to testify at the end of the hearing and Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York, rejected the request, saying that the committee had concluded its work for the day and further testimony from the governor would be a political distraction.
