The Lewiston Mall Sears store will close in mid-January 2013, a message that came to the mall's manager as a surprise last week.
The Sun Journal reported that the store's liquidation sale will begin Oct. 16, according to Sears corporate spokeswoman Kim Freely, who said the store's lease is up and will not be renewed.
Freely said the retail chain, which has locations in Augusta, Brunswick and South Portland, has not announced a new store opening to replace the Lewiston location, which employs 60 to 70 people.
In December 2011, the company announced closures for approximately 120 stores, according to the Wall Street Journal, but left the Maine locations untouched.
New Mexico Business Weekly reported this March that Sears Holding Corp., which owns Sears and Kmart stores, announced plans to close a total of 173 stores in early 2012 in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Through 2011, the company reported a net loss of $3.14 billion, the business journal reported.
