Live + Work in Maine broadens its marketing message with new campaign, networking events

Photo / Tim Greenway Nate Wildes, executive director of Live + Work in Maine, says the nonprofit is retooling its message to include people who have recently moved to Maine.

In a makeover of its previous campaigns to draw former Mainers back to the state, Live + Work in Maine is expanding its message to celebrate Mainers who have chosen the state for the first time as well as those who have returned. The message: “Welcome Home.”

Live + Work in Maine, a private-sector initiative designed to increase awareness about Maine’s career opportunities and quality of life, has for several years organized a “boomerang” campaign to target those who have left Maine to celebrate career opportunities here.

This year, the campaign will again target those who have left and come back — the boomerangs — but also Mainers who have chosen to live here for the first time. The goal is to help them make connections in their new communities.

“Many people who moved to Maine over the past few years, and especially those who came here during the pandemic and are working remotely, may not have had the chance to build the connections and community that are so important to job and life satisfaction,” said Nate Wildes, executive director of Live + Work in Maine. “We are grateful to our partners across the state for helping us roll out the welcome mat to help new and returning Mainers feel at home.”

Free after-work networking events are planned in Portland, Brunswick, Lewiston/Auburn, Bangor and Presque Isle from Nov. 4 to Dec. 2. Details are available here

“As businesses in our community struggle to find the workforce they need to grow, we know that attracting and retaining people to the region is more important than ever. These fun events are part of a key strategy to create the personal and professional relationships that tether professionals to the area, and make sure they call Maine home." said Shanna Cox, executive director of the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and its young professional’s organization, Uplift LA.

The “Welcome Home” slogan also echoes Gov. Janet Mills’ “Welcome Home” slogan and sign at the Maine border. Mills has pushed to attract newcomers, including immigrants and young people, to the aging, rural state. Live + Work in Maine said it wanted to align its campaign with the state effort to have a unified message to newcomers.
