Lobster catch could set new record

Maine's lobstermen likely set a new catch record in 2010, bringing in more than 90 million pounds.

The Department of Marine Resources on Friday released preliminary catch totals for last year, setting the catch at an estimated 93 million pounds, according to the Bangor Daily News. The total is a 12-million-pound increase from the previous record of 81 million pounds, set in 2009. The estimated value of the landings in 2010 is $308.7 million, making the average price that lobstermen received in 2010 $3.31 per pound, up from $2.93 per pound in 2009. There was no indication of when final numbers for 2010 would be released.

Maine has nearly 6,000 licensed commercial lobstermen, of which 4,260 are believed to have actively fished in 2010.
