Lobsterman launches unionization campaign

A Vinalhaven lobsterman is leading an effort to organize workers in Maine's top fishing industry.

The Bangor Daily News reported lobsterman Justin Dyer has started meeting with groups of fellow lobstermen across the state to form what he's calling a union.

While lobstermen are mostly independently employed and wouldn't go on strike to raise prices, Dyer told the paper the effort would aim to give lobstermen a stronger voice in Augusta.

As of Friday, Dyer told the paper he had signatures from 160 interested colleagues and was aiming for 200.

Dyer said the union would be another voice alongside the Maine Lobstermen's Association, founded in 1954. That organization now has 1,200 members.

There are around 5,000 lobstermen in the state.
