Maine's January unemployment rate remains in line with last month and one year ago, standing at 7.3% in the latest preliminary estimates.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest seasonally adjusted figures today, showing that less of Maine's active work force is unemployed than the national average, estimated at 7.9% in January.
For the 64th consecutive month, Maine had a higher employment-to-population ratio than the rest of the country, with 60.4% of the state's population over 16 employed. The national average is 58.6%.
Across New England, the estimated unemployment rate was 7.1% for January. Connecticut and Rhode Island had more job seekers out of work than Maine while Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont had lower unemployment rates.
Vermont had the lowest unemployment rate estimate for January, coming in at 4.7%.
