Low-income housing projects will receive $2.9 million in federal tax credits
Nearly $3 million in federal housing tax credits will go to five Maine projects, including a new Portland apartment complex with 39 units, and a plan to build 21 cabins for homeless veterans on the grounds of the Togus VA Medical Center.
Maine State Housing Authority, in announcing the low-income housing credits, said the $2.9 million in tax credits will generate about $26 million in private investment for the housing projects, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The projects being awarded the credits are:
• St. Ignatius Apartments in Sanford, which will receive $938,000 in tax credits to help rehabilitate an existing three-story building and construct another building to create 66 housing units for the elderly
• Carleton Street Apartments in Portland, which will receive $581,000 in tax credits to help construct 37 family housing units
• Huse School Apartments in Bath, which will receive $647,000 in tax credits to help build 43 affordable-housing units
• Cabin in the Woods at Togus, which will receive $388,000 in tax credits to help build 21 energy-efficient cabins and a community center for homeless veterans and
• Blackstone Apartments in Falmouth, which will receive $300,000 in tax credits to help acquire and rehabilitate 20 existing units and create 19 new units for elderly tenants.
