Luke’s Lobster, which operates 29 seafood retailing shacks across the country, will open wholesale buying and shipping operations on Portland’s waterfront, the Portland Press Herald reported.
The company has leased a landing facility at 60 Portland Pier, space that was occupied by New Meadow Lobster until it shut down last December.
The facility will initially be staffed by one employee, although others may be added, Luke’s spokeswoman Kalei Talwar said. The company also plans to improve the site as a berthing location, according to a news release, and may add new floats and electric service.
“The wharf will allow commercial lobstermen to dock their boats and sell their sustainably caught seafood, lobster and crab, directly to Luke’s,” Talwar told the Press Herald.
All of the Portland catch will go directly to Luke’s processing plant, Cape Seafood, in Saco.
Cape Elizabeth native Luke Holden, owner of Luke’s Lobster, said, “Operating Portland Pier is an opportunity for us to support our community and extend the tradition of the working waterfront.”
The company began in 2009 with a single seafood shop in New York City, but last year expected to gross over $30 million in sales. Holden expected growth of 20% to 25% this year.
Luke’s buys about 80% of its lobster from Maine. The company operates a seafood shack in Tenants Harbor in addition to its Saco processing facility.
