Maine Chamber forms PAC opposing tax for education funding

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce has formed a political action committee to oppose an initiative that hopes to increase local education funding by adding a 3% tax on households earning over $200,000 a year.

“It’s not for us an issue of underestimating or not appreciating education. It’s really about how you go about financing that need. And putting [it] on the backs of the economy doesn’t serve the purpose,” Dana Connors, the president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

MPBN reported that the PAC, known as “No on Question 2,” is concerned that the tax will be detrimental to family businesses and could discourage professionals, like doctors or engineers, from moving or staying within the state, concerns also voiced by Gov. Paul LePage.
