The Penobscot County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation awarded a total of $137,130 in grants to 16 recipients in its latest funding round, including $7,500 to the Maine Academy of Modern Music for expanded programming in Bangor.
Jeff Shaw, the academy's executive director and founder, told Mainebiz that the organization is offering two summer rock camps in Bangor this summer, with the goal of launching year-round programming in the Queen City starting this fall.
Both initiatives are in partnership with Bangor's LaunchPad arts incubator and the Bangor Arts Exchange.
Bangor Public Health and Community Services, to provide education and plan for the launch of a post-overdose follow-up program to support individuals who are getting help: $10,000
Christine B. Foundation Inc., to support leadership engagement and camaraderie through a retreat for the board of directors and key stakeholders: $1,755
Community Collaborative for Hospice and End-of-Life Care, to improve hospice and end-of-life care delivery in Greater Bangor: $10,000
Community Health and Counseling Services, to establish a comprehensive life skills program as its Stillwater Academy moves to a larger facility in August 2019: $10,000
Down East AIDS Network, to strengthen and expand recovery support services for people who use drugs: $10,000
Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center, to provide hormone therapy and mental health counselling for transgender and gender-nonconforming youth in Penobscot County: $10,000
Penquis CAP Inc., to provide Touchpoints training for more than 100 Head Start and Early Head Start staff: $10,000
Shaw House, to purchase computers and a terminal server for a transition to electronic records: $10,000
St. Andre Home Inc., to continue development of the Hope Rising outpatient treatment and community-based outreach services project: $10,000
Bangor Symphony Orchestra, to expand repertoire and improve audience interaction for outreach programs with iPads for musicians: $9,625
Food AND Medicine Jobs with Justice Education Fund, to increase and update individual donor and volunteer management programs to improve the long-term sustainability of the organization: $10,000
Hirundo Wildlife Trust, to improve the well-being of community seniors through informative guided nature walks on its universal access Trail of the Senses: $5,000
Maine Academy of Modern Music, to expand its music education programming to youth living in Greater Bangor: $7,500
Maine Discovery Museum, to develop educational programs for children about the Penobscot River Watershed to coincide with a new interactive exhibit about the river and region: $9,000
New Ventures Maine, for establishment of the Business Resource Partners of Greater Bangor to assist businesses as they grow through education, referrals, and personalized advising: $4,250
Union Street Brick Church, to improve the kitchen that provides meals to those who need assistance: $10,000
Headquartered in Ellsworth, with additional personnel in Portland, Dover-Foxcroft and Mars Hill, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and partners to prove investments, personalized service, local expertise and strategic giving to improve the quality of life for all Maine people.
The Penobscot County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects and nonprofit to strengthen communities in the county. Applications go through the Maine Community Foundation's Community Building Grant Program and are reviewed by a committee of local leaders. The next proposal deadline is Feb. 15, 2020.
