Maine has best medical marijuana program: report

A new report said Maine has the best medical marijuana program out of the 35 states that have some form of law regulating medical cannabis.

The Bangor Daily News wrote that the report from industry trade group Americans for Safe Access rated states on several factors, including access to medicine, patient rights and protection against discrimination.

Maine received a score of 339 out of 400 total points in the report, with Rhode Island, Washington and California trailing behind.

The state received high marks for “functionality,” which looked at administrative or supply problems,” but received lower marks for not allowing physicians to prescribe marijuana to treat more ailments and not allowing multi-year registrations for patients.

A separate part of the Americans for Safe Access Report that didn't count toward the overall score gave Maine zero points for things like labor standards and product safety.

Becky DeKeuster, the executive clinical director of the Wellness Connection of Maine, the state's largest marijuana dispensary, told the BDN that the state can improve on these factors by providing clarity to what are considered acceptable pesticides for marijuana plants, among other suggested safeguards. Wellness Connection was investigated by the state for use of illegal pesticides last year, though it has come into full compliance with state rules since then.
