Crystal Landry, a registered nurse who serves as CEO of Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln, was installed as the new chair of the Maine Hospital Association’s board of directors on Wednesday.
“Health care leadership is tough,” Landry told Mainebiz in 2021 when she was honored as a Woman to Watch. “I enjoy that there is something new every day, but I couldn’t do my job without the team we have."
As board chair at the Augusta-based Maine Hospital Association, Landry succeeds Dr. Mark Fourré, who is retiring as president of Coastal Healthcare Alliance. The alliance includes Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital.
Landry was installed as the new board chair at an evening ceremony in Rockport.
“Crystal has proven to be an outstanding health care leader,” Steven Michaud, president of the Maine Hospital Association, told Mainebiz ahead of Wednesday's event. “She not only effectively runs a rural hospital but she has been very involved in statewide health care policy with the Maine Hospital Association and has an extraordinary grasp on all aspects of healthcare policy and management. We are all very fortunate she has accepted this role and will lead the hospital field during the very challenging times ahead.”
Landry started her health care career as a certified nursing assistant, later becoming a registered nurse. She worked her way up through various clinical supervisory and managerial positions at Eastern Maine Healthcare before joining Penobscot Valley Hospital in 2015 as the senior director of quality.
She was named hospital CEO in 2019, less than two weeks before the hospital filed for bankruptcy. The institution successfully emerged from bankruptcy in 2021 without any layoffs and “on stronger financial ground,” Landry told Mainebiz that year.
The Augusta-based nonprofit represents 36 community-governed hospitals in Maine and advocates on behalf of hospitals in Maine’s Legislature. The group also provides educational services and serves as a clearinghouse for comprehensive information for its hospital members, lawmakers and the public.
Chrissi Maguire, CEO of Mount Desert Island Hospital, is chair-elect of the association’s board. Steve Littleson, CEO of Central Maine Healthcare is treasurer, and Nathan Howell, incoming president and CEO of MaineGeneral Health, is secretary.
New board members include: Marie Vienneau, president of Northern Light CA Dean and Northern Light Mayo hospitals; Tricia Costigan, president of Northern Light Inland Hospital; Charlie Therrien, president of Northern Light Mercy Hospital; Randy Clark, president of Northern Light Sebasticook Hospital; and Patrick Taylor, president and CEO of York Hospital.
The new board members will officially assume their duties July 1.
