Northeast Credit Union, a Portsmouth, N.H.-based institution that got its start in Maine and now has five branches in the state, plans to adopt a new name this summer: Lighthouse Credit Union.
While the credit union has not given a specific date for the switchover, billboards showing the new brand are already up at several locations in New Hampshire, spokeswoman Diane Carragher told Mainebiz.
She also said that while the company is aware of another Lighthouse Credit Union — based in Toronto — Northeast does not foresee any confusion with that organization following the name change.
Northeast Credit Union teamed up with Anchour, a marketing agency in Lewiston, on the rebrand. The new identity aims to convey "guidance and direction, serving as a beacon for navigational aid," Northeast said in its announcement.
"We believe our members will change the world, and we’re here to light the way," added Chris Parker, Northeast Credit Union’s president and CEO.
From its 1936 roots at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Northeast Credit Union has grown to more than $2 billion in assets and 17 branches throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
The credit union is owned by more than 150,000 members, of whom 34,000 are in the Pine Tree State.
Besides a branch at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the credit union’s Maine branches are in Biddeford, Kennebunk, Westbrook and Sanford.
Out of 417 total employees, 92 live in Maine and 50 work in Maine, which is home to 65 actual lighthouses.
In coming months, the credit union said it plans to launch a rewards program for members as well as the opportunity to make donations to support community needs.
“Within our new checking and credit card portfolio, members will have the opportunity to donate their rewards to the Lighthouse Credit Union Foundation, which is focused on affordable housing solutions, eliminating food insecurity and education," Carragher said, noting that the credit union would match those donations.
