Mainebiz picked up a silver award for its 2015 “Fact Book: Doing Business in Maine” in The Alliance of Area Business Publishers annual competition for newspaper and magazine business periodicals featuring 644 entries from 46 publications in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The award presentations took place Saturday at the end of the AABP’s three-day annual summer conference in Des Moines, Iowa.
Judges from the University of Missouri School of Journalism judged entries in categories showcasing excellence in journalism, photography and design in the submissions from regional business publications, both large and small.
In selecting Mainebiz’s “Fact Book: Doing Business in Maine” for the silver award in the “best ancillary publication” category for small business publications, judges had this to say: “Mainebiz has developed a good variation on the fact book package with other stories mixed in among the data reporting. The design is clean and shows great restraint, making it an overall handsome publication. It has a quite human personality. The data are clean and crisp and easy to access.”
Mainebiz’s sister publications, The Hartford Business Journal and the Worcester Business Journal, which are owned by New England Business Media, also received awards during the competition. Hartford Business Journal received gold awards in the medium circulation category for “best scoop” and “best explanatory journalism” and silver awards for “best editorial” and “best recurring feature.” Worcester Business Journal received a gold award in the small circulation category for “best editorial” and a silver award for “best newspaper.”
“Entries across all categories demonstrate how widely publications have embraced creative ways to present essential information and contextual material to help audiences understand the complex stories happening around them,” said Reuben Stern, who coordinated the judging of the competition.
