Mass. company buys Stinson cannery
A Massachusetts-based lobster company has signed an agreement to buy the shuttered former Stinson Seafood cannery in Down East Maine.
Chelsea-based Live Lobster Co. Inc. has entered into a purchase agreement with Bumble Bee Foods LLC for the former sardine cannery in Prospect Harbor that closed in April, according to the Associated Press. The purchase price was not disclosed. Live Lobster Co. plans to use the plant to buy and sell lobster and eventually process lobster, and expects to create up to 40 jobs in the first year and 120 jobs within two years. The acquisition is expected to be complete within 70 days, according to the AP.
Bumble Bee in February announced it would close the cannery, putting nearly 130 people out of work.
