Northern Light Mercy Hospital has received a $1 million match-based donation to support its consolidation on Fore River Parkway in Portland.
The hospital said Thursday that four anonymous donors will contribute up to that amount in a one-to-one match of all gifts made to the hospital’s ongoing capital campaign through March 31, 2020.
The gift was pledged in honor of the donors’ mother, a longtime Mercy supporter with ties to Maine and the greater Portland community, according to a news release.
“Mom has demonstrated her belief in the importance of Mercy Hospital. We want to acknowledge the special place Mercy has in her heart and help ensure the success of the Mercy capital campaign,” said one of the anonymous donors in the release.
To date, Mercy has raised more than 75% of the $20 million it set out to gather through a capital campaign launched in 2017.
The 230-bed hospital, affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, was founded in 1918 and in 1943 moved to its current facility at 144 State St., Portland. In 2008 it opened a second campus on 42 acres of land overlooking the Fore River, and has migrated many of its services there.
Mercy, which was acquired in 2013 by what is now Northern Light Health, announced in 2017 that it would consolidate all operations at the Fore River site.
Earlier this year, Mercy received state approval of the consolidation plan. Construction to expand the Fore River facility is expected to begin next year and be completed in 2022.
Mercy President Charlie Therrien said in the release, “The Mercy family is deeply grateful that these remarkable donors have chosen to honor their mother with such an impactful and meaningful gift. Their generosity provides Mercy with a tremendous opportunity to double our contributions over the next four months to help complete our capital campaign.”
