More cuts loom in Augusta

Lawmakers will have another $30 million in cuts to make when they resume work July 22.

The $5.8 billion two-year budget passed in the last session reflected millions in cuts to deal with a $1.4 billion drop in revenue in the current fiscal year and in the next biennium, according to the Portland Press Herald. The budget included a $30 million "place holder" for additional cuts that must be identified before July 1, 2010.

Members of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee intend to meet throughout the summer looking for additional cuts to what many consider an already lean budget. The plan is to present the full Legislature a proposal in the next session, which begins early in 2010.
