New licensing process for hemp producers accepting applications

Under recently revised rules, Maine’s legalized hemp industry is accepting license applications from businesses who want to join it.

The state Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is offering and accepting applications for indoor and outdoor hemp production via a website. The licensing process has undergone changes as part of recent rulemaking for the industry.

In response to public feedback during that process, DACF rejected a proposed increase in the outdoor license acreage fee from $50 to $100 per acre. The new rules also create a rolling license process that allow producers to apply year-round, rather than during the previous three-month window.

The rules also allow unlimited licenses for indoor hemp production, with a fee of $500 plus a 25-cent charge per square foot of growing area. In a press release, the department said, "Being able to grow hemp crops in greenhouses and other indoor structures year-round is an option many Maine farmers have wanted since hemp growing became legal in Maine in 2016."
