Three environmental groups have filed an appeal of the state's approval of Plum Creek Timber Co.'s massive development in the Moosehead Lake region.
The Forest Ecology Network and RESTORE: The North Woods filed an appeal in Kennebec County Superior Court against the Land Use Regulation Commission's approval last month of the Moosehead development, which includes two resorts and more than 1,000 housing units, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Lynn Williams, an attorney for the groups, challenged the demonstrated need for the project and questioned LURC's authority to rezone a region for a private company.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine today also filed an appeal with the Maine Superior Court, arguing LURC "violated the laws and rules that govern how Plum Creek's application should have been reviewed" and that the decision should be overturned, according to a press release from the council.
LURC Director Catherine Carroll said despite the appeal, Plum Creek can begin the process to propose its phase developments at any time. LURC unanimously approved the project Sept. 23.
