Sandra Steingraber, an internationally recognized author and environmentalist, will speak at Maine Audubon later this month about Rachel Carson’s legacy and how the work Carson did and the challenges she faced inspire and teach those who ground their environmental activism in science.

Steingraber is the author of “Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment” and co-founder of New Yorkers Against Fracking. Her May 24 talk at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth is sponsored by Maine Audubon and the Environmental Health Strategy Center.

A mother who survived cancer that occurred as a young adult, she has devoted her life to advocating against toxic chemicals in the environment, on behalf of children and communities nationwide. She is a sought-after public speaker who’s been hailed as “the modern-day Rachel Carson.”

In addition to her book and documentary film, “Living Downstream,” Steingraber is the author of three books about the burden of pollution on the human body. Her experience with illness linked to local pollution motivated her to become a public advocate for the environment and public health.

Steingraber has long cited Rachel Carson’s life and career as a deciding influence and has edited the just-released Library of America anthology of Carson’s work. Of Carson’s writing, Steingraber has said: “Science alone could not have launched this movement. Science with poetry could.”

Reservations for the entire May 24 event — which includes a 5:30 p.m. reception with Steingraber with complimentary wine, beer and appetizers followed by her 7 p.m. presentation and book-signing — cost $24 and can be made at www.ourhealthyfuture.org

Presentation-only tickets are available for $15 for the general public, or $12 for Maine Audubon members at www.maineaudubon.org
