OSHA cites Augusta steel plant

Georgia-based Cives Steel is facing $132,000 in fines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for alleged safety violations at its Augusta steel fabrication plant.

An OSHA investigation found electrical, crushing and laceration hazards, as well as repeat and serious violations, according to the Kennebec Journal. OSHA said maintenance employees did not have or use personal protective equipment when dealing with electrical equipment, a violation that carries a $70,000 fine. Other violations include improper use of extension cords and chainsaws, fall hazards and failure to test a lifting device. OSHA's area director for Maine, William Coffin, said the size of the fine is because of "the severity and recurring nature" of the hazards.

Cives Steel has 15 business days to rectify the violations, meet with OSHA or contest the findings, according to the paper. The company has about 150 employees in Augusta, and its work in Maine includes fabricating structural steel used to frame the new MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
