OSHA fines Monmouth sewer pump co.

Federal workplace safety officials are proposing nearly $17,000 in penalties for a Monmouth company following the death of two employees working on a sewer pump.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Stevens Electric & Pump Service for four safety violations, including failure to ventilate the area where the men were working and failing to test the air quality before and during the work, according to The Associated Press. Winfield Studley of Windsor and Richard Kemp of Monmouth died from inhalation of sewer gases last month while working on a sewer pump at the Lodge at Turbats Creek, a motel in Kennebunkport.

OSHA also said there was no system in place to handle an emergency rescue of employees.
