Oxford Airport delays upgrades

The Oxford County Regional Airport will not be seeing an improvement to its runway anytime soon after being told by a hired contractor that its quoted price is now too low.

Gendron and Gendron of Lewiston said the company would take a $132,000 loss if it rehabilitated the runway, replaced lights, cleared trees and did other work for the roughly $1.28 million it originally estimated for the project. The company blamed the high prices of asphalt for its turnaround, according to the Sun Journal.

County administrator Carole Fulton told the paper the country would rebid the project. Shaw Brothers Construction of Gorham had bid $1.55 million for the project, while K & K Excavation of Turner had asked for $1.82 million. The country has a $1.87 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to help pay for upgrades.
