Pine Tree Legal gets final installment of fair housing grant

Pine Tree Legal Assistance was recently awarded the third and final installment of a three-year, $300,000 grant to sustain its work in furthering fair housing in Maine.

The Portland-based organization said that 2018 "was a significant year in furthering fair housing in Maine," in a news release announcing the receipt of the funding. Last year, the Portland-based nonprofit law firm was contacted by 244 people who needed reasonable accommodations or who faced discrimination that compromised their ability to have fair housing, the organization said.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has supported Pine Tree Legal's Fair Housing Unit, which represents individuals and families who have been denied housing on the basis of their race, color, national origin or ancestry, religion, gender, disability, familial status and sexual orientation.

The three-year private enforcement initiative grant helps nonprofit fair housing enforcement organizations carry out investigations and other enforcement activities to prevent or eliminate discriminatory housing practices.

Pine Tree Legal's mission is to ensure that state and federal laws affecting poor people are upheld, while also addressing systemic barriers to justice faced by Mainers with low incomes. Established in 1967, it provides free civil legal assistance in cases where it can make a difference in meeting basic human needs or in enforcing basic rights, including access to housing, food, income, safety, education and health care.
