After more than four years of deliberation, the staff at the Land Use Regulation Commission yesterday recommended giving final approval to Plum Creek Timber Co.'s controversial development proposal for the Moosehead Lake region.
Seattle-based Plum Creek first submitted a development proposal for the land it owns in the Moosehead Lake region to LURC in April 2005. Since then, the plan has changed significantly as the company has incorporated recommendations by LURC, including increasing the conservation easement to cover nearly 400,000 acres and scaling back development and concentrating it in areas that are already relatively developed. Still, the proposal for nearly 1,000 house lots and two resorts on 16,000 acres is the largest LURC has ever considered.
Armed with their staff's recommendation, the seven LURC members are expected to make a final vote on the proposal at its meeting Sept. 23. If the proposal is approved, there is a period where the decision can be appealed to the court system.
